Known for providing quality dental care at reasonable prices in the more excellent Houston, Texas area, Summit Dental Center™ can perform a quick and minimally inconvenient tooth extraction to treat many dental conditions, including Crohn’s disease the gums.
What is tooth extraction?
Tooth extraction involves removing a tooth from its socket in the jaw.
Reasons for tooth extraction
- Gum disease that has significantly damaged a tooth.
- Infection cannot be remedied with root canal treatment and antibiotics.
- A crowded mouth that needs to make room for the teeth to line up properly
- Risk of disease, usually associated with a poor immune system due to illness
What is the procedure for tooth extraction?
A qualified oral surgeon or dentist will perform tooth extraction surgery. First, anesthesia (usually intravenous anesthesia) is provided for the patient’s comfort. Once the patient is below, the bone and tissue surrounding the affected tooth are removed. This ensures that the tooth can be thoroughly cleaned and extracted effectively.
The gums are then sutured back with stitches, which helps quicker recovery time and minor bleeding. Finally, the surgeon places gauze over the wound for a blood clot to form to control bleeding. After the procedure is finished, the patient will rest in the recovery room.
Preparation for tooth extraction
Early prevention and treatment almost always equate to a better outcome. Your dentist can help you first assess whether or not he needs to have his tooth extracted through an initial oral exam and x-ray. If swelling, pain, or infection occurs before the tooth extraction, you may need to take antibiotics to ensure the condition doesn’t worsen. Antibacterial medications, mouthwashes, and pain relievers may be prescribed to lessen infected tooth pain before surgery.
Tooth Extraction Recovery
Follow your doctor’s instructions after tooth extraction surgery to avoid further complications.
In general, healing and recovery take three to five days. Ice packs may be applied for swelling, as recommended by your doctor. Gauze can also be reapplied for bleeding. Softer foods should be eaten immediately after the procedure for a few days, while spicy, complex, and chewy foods should be avoided. Your doctor will advise or prescribe the appropriate pain reliever for you. Also, be very careful when brushing and flossing immediately after surgery.
How much does tooth extraction cost?
Essential tooth extraction under local anesthesia starts at $160.00 per tooth.
