Retirement coverage in 2022

UnitedHealthcare Premium Supplements and Prescription Drug Program:

There are no changes to 2022 coverage for the UnitedHealthcare Advanced Supplement Plan or the Prescription Drug Plan.

Tax information about 403(b) accounts

In recognition of our retirees for Arlington Public Schools (APS), the school board provides medical and dental benefits to employees who enroll in group medical and dental insurance when they retire.

For retiree APS with 20 or more years of service, the school board’s contribution to the retiree’s premium is the same as the contribution to the active employee. Tuition will be reduced for retirees with less than 20 years of service. The Virginia Full-Time Retirement System (VRS) covers full-time supervision for A, E, G, T, P grade employees and retirees who have served 15 years or more and are entitled to a monthly health insurance credit of $4.00 per year VRS service.

Medicare

Supplemental Health Insurance : (For retirees and eligible spouses over age 65)

If retirees and their eligible spouses are enrolled in a Cigna health plan immediately before retirement, they will be provided with the UnitedHealth Group Advanced Supplemental Plan supplementary medical insurance. Retirees and their eligible spouses will receive Kaiser Permanente’s Medicare Plus or Medicare Advantage plans if they join Kaiser Permanente immediately before retirement. (Retirees must also select coverage if they wish to cover eligible dependents.) Retirees and their spouses who do not opt ​​​​for supplemental coverage at retirement will not be eligible to participate at a future date.

Retirees under age 65 : (For non-Medicare retirees, eligible spouses, and dependent children)

If the retiree and his eligible spouse and/or dependent children Insured spouses and dependents will continue to enjoy the same “active employee” medical plan coverage immediately enrolling the retiree until retirement. (Retirees must also elect health coverage if they wish to cover any eligible dependents.) Retirees who do not elect to continue health coverage in retirement, their spouses and dependent children will be ineligible at a future date to join.

Dental Insurance

Retiree dental insurance is available through Delta Dental in Virginia. Retiree dental coverage will be provided to retirees, spouses, and dependent children if they are enrolled in a dental plan immediately before retirement. (Retirees must also choose dental coverage if they wish to cover any eligible dependents.) Retirees who do not choose to continue dental coverage in retirement will not be able to enroll at a future date. Retirees pay the full cost of this insurance.

Important Information

Retirees who do not elect for medical and/or dental benefits upon retirement will not be able to enroll at a future date.

The retiree’s spouse and/or dependent children must be in the Arlington Public Schools (APS) medical and dental plans for at least five years before the employee’s retirement to be eligible for retiree health and dental coverage.

Age 65

Retirees and/or spouses who are or will retire at age 65 are strongly advised to apply for Medicare Parts A and B at least three months before retirement or turning 3 years old. An enrollment form will be received from United Healthcare or Kaiser Permanente (if applicable).

Annual Open Enrollment

Each year, open enrollment materials will be mailed to the home addresses of participating retirees. It is important to inform APS Benefits of any changes to your home address.
