Coverage of Type 1 Voluntary Motor Insurance
In Thailand, Type 1 motor insurance provides comprehensive coverage for the loss of the insured vehicle in the event of an accident, fire, theft, or natural disaster, regardless of the party’s fault. It also provides liability coverage for third parties (property damage and personal injury) when the driver is at fault, including damage to the vehicle’s windshield. Category 1 coverage also includes damaged or cracked windshields, medical expenses, personal accident coverage, and bail for the insured or the driver named on the policy.
Who is eligible for Type 1 Voluntary Auto Insurance?
- New cars up to 5 years old – There is a high risk of requiring more expensive car repairs when these types of vehicles are damaged or stolen compared to older cars. If it is a brand new vehicle, the driver also needs to be familiar with the use or operation of the vehicle. All of this adds to the risk factor and potentially high costs when a new car is damaged.
- Inexperienced new drivers – New drivers are at higher risk for accidents no matter what kind of car they drive. We encourage new drivers to take out Type 1 car insurance to ensure they don’t incur any high costs for mistakes they might make as they get Acquainted with driving.
- A car that is used a lot – the risk to the vehicle is not entirely with the driver or the car itself. It also depends on how the car is used. Risk factors increase if the car is frequently used for long-distance driving or daily commuting. Those who use their cars a lot and drive long distances will need better coverage, and Type 1 coverage is the way to go.
Coverage of Type 2+ Voluntary Motor Insurance
Type 2+ auto insurance in Thailand has higher coverage than Type 1 auto insurance, is less expensive and has slightly different coverage. Category 2+ auto insurance covers damage to the insured vehicle without regard to the fault of another third-party vehicle. It also includes fire, theft, or flood damage, and liability to third parties (property damage and personal injury) if the driver is at fault. Type 2+ auto insurance also provides coverage for medical expenses, personal accident coverage, and bail for a driver who is agreed to by the insured or a real-name driver listed on the auto insurance policy. Category 2+ policies do not cover own damage and windshield damage without third parties.
Who is eligible to purchase Type 2+ Voluntary Auto Insurance?
- Cars that are used frequently – but parked in a risky area or not in a gated area. For example, often park your car on the side of the road or any public area. If you decide not to buy Type 1 insurance because of the high cost or the age of your car, you can consider Type 2+ auto insurance, which offers lower premiums and similar coverage. In the event of a car collision, it pays for the loss of the insured vehicle, regardless of who was at fault, as long as other identified vehicles were involved in the accident.
Coverage of Type 3+ Voluntary Motor Insurance
In Thailand, Type 3+ car insurance covers the loss of the insured vehicle, regardless of fault, as long as other identified vehicles were involved in the accident. It also includes liability to third parties (property damage and personal injury) when the driver is at fault. Class 3+ auto insurance also includes medical expenses, personal accident coverage, and bail for a driver agreed by the insured or a real-name driver named in the auto policy. Category 3+ policies do not cover self-damage without third parties, windshield damage, and coverage against fire, theft, or flooding.
Who is eligible to purchase Type 3+ Voluntary Auto Insurance?
- Cars 7 years or older – no matter how old the car is, the key is to safeguard against unnecessary risk. Even though body insurance is less important in older cars, you can still be liable for property damage and personal injury to third parties in the event of a vehicle collision. So no matter how old the vehicle is, it is still recommended that you purchase suicidal car insurance.
- Cars that are used frequently – but without the risk from the parking spot. Cars that are frequently used on the road have a higher risk of accidents. Even if the driver has never been involved in an accident, it could be caused by careless driving by other drivers on the road. Buying any insurance for your car will give the driver a little bit of protection and remove the difficulty and stress of making claims to third parties on your own.
Coverage of Type 2 Voluntary Motor Insurance
In Thailand, Type 2 car insurance covers the loss of the insured vehicle in the event of fire and theft, as well as liability to third parties (property damage and personal injury) if the driver is at fault. The second category of coverage also includes medical expenses, personal accident insurance, and bail for the insured or the driver whose name is specified in the policy.
Coverage of Type 3 Voluntary Motor Insurance
Type 3 car insurance in Thailand covers liability to third parties (property damage and bodily injury) when the driver is at fault. Category 3 coverage also includes medical expenses, personal accident coverage, and a policyholder or driver bail.
Who is eligible for Type 2 or 3 Voluntary Auto Insurance?
- Inexpensive fees and low coverage – These are the two types of plans that offer the lowest premiums for those on a tight budget, but they also provide the most basic coverage. With Type 2 car insurance, drivers can cover basic liability to third parties, as well as protection against car fire or theft. In category 3, drivers can provide basic liability coverage for third parties involved in an accident. These types of auto insurance are not popular these days because they are not comprehensive. This means that in the event of a collision, even if a third party is involved, they are not responsible for the loss of the insured car. If compared with 2+ or 3+ auto insurance, these auto insurances are more cost-effective and have wider coverage, although the premiums are slightly higher. Having Type 2 or 3 car insurance is still better than relying only on mandatory auto insurance, as it will cover the damage you can cause to a third party.
Thailand’s compulsory traffic insurance (compulsory traffic insurance Por Ror Bor)
In Thailand, all vehicles are required by law to purchase compulsory auto insurance (compulsory traffic insurance). It only covers bodily harm to occupants (including the driver) and third parties. The amount insured is very limited and does not cover any damage to the insured vehicle or third-party vehicles and property. Roojai strongly recommends that every car owner purchase voluntary car insurance in addition to mandatory car insurance.
What are the coverage options for voluntary auto insurance?
Deductible
Choose a policy with a deductible to save money. Roojai.com offers lower premiums for policies with deductibles.
What is the deductible?
If you file a claim through your fault (or without involving a third party), you will pay for the repair of the vehicle up to the deductible. Any excess over the deductible is paid by the insurance company.
If you file a claim without fault, the deductible will not apply.
Here are some examples of how the deductible works.
- You buy a policy with a deductible of ฿3,000.
- You file a claim for negligence and the cost of repairing the vehicle is ฿25,000. You pay ฿3,000 and the insurance company pays the rest (฿22,000).
- You file a claim that does not involve a third-party and the cost of repairing the vehicle is ฿2,000. You pay for the repair yourself, as the total repair cost is less than your deductible ฿3,000. The insurance company will not pay this for you.
- You file a claim involving a third party, the third party is at fault, and it costs ฿40,000 to repair your vehicle. Since you are not at fault, the deductible does not apply. The insurance company pays all repair costs (฿40,000). You don’t need to pay anything.
If you choose a policy with a deductible and do not make any claims, you will pay less because Roojai.com offers lower premiums for policies with a deductible.
However, if you choose a policy with a deductible and make one or more claims, you may end up paying more, as in this example.
- A policy with a deductible of ฿3,000 and a premium of ฿10,000.
- The same policy with no deductible has a premium of ฿12,000.
- You choose a policy with a deductible of ฿3,000 and you can save ฿2,000 right now.
- During the year, you filed a negligence claim to repair the vehicle for ฿25,000. You pay ฿3,000 and the insurance company pays the rest (฿22,000).
- In this case, you overpaid ฿1000 for choosing the deductible (saving ฿2000 in premium and paying ฿3000 in repair).
There is no right or wrong when it comes to choosing a policy deductible. It’s up to you!

Driver program
You can save money by specifying who will drive your car, or you can choose a more flexible driver plan that allows more people to drive your car. Roojai.com offers four different driver plans to suit your needs.
- Real-name driver program.
- This plan has the lowest premium. You need to designate everyone who will drive your car (up to 4 people). The plan only covers accidents that occur while your car is driven by one of the drivers named on the policy. Coverage may not be available if someone else was driving at the time of the accident.
- Any driver program over the age of 30.
- This plan offers more convenience than the real-name driver plan but is slightly more expensive. Anyone 30 or older can drive your car without having to name it on the policy.
- You need to designate the primary driver, the person who drives your car most of the time. This plan will cover accidents that occur while the primary driver or someone 30 years of age or older drives your car. No coverage is provided if a person under the age of 30 (other than the primary driver) was driving the car at the time of the accident.
- Any driver program over the age of 25.
- The plan offers more convenience than any driver plan over the age of 30 but at a slightly higher price. Anyone aged 25 or older can drive your car without having to name it on the policy.
- You need to designate the primary driver, the person who drives your car most of the time. This plan will cover accidents that occur while the primary driver or anyone 25 years of age or older is driving your car. No coverage is provided if a person under the age of 25 (other than the primary driver) was driving the car at the time of the accident.
- Any driver program.
- This plan is the most convenient, but also the highest premium. Anyone can drive your car without stating it on the policy.
- The program will cover all accidents regardless of who was driving the car at the time of the accident. You still need to name the main driver on your policy
