Los Carneros
The Los Carneros AVA is a wine growing region on the Napa Valley and Sonoma Coasts. The area is known for its cool climate, which allows Pinot Noir and Chardonnay to thrive. It is also a place of great sparkling wine production.
Los Carneros is located on the northern edge of San Pablo Bay. The vineyards here are subject to cool winds and fog that are characteristic of the Bay Area. This allows for a slow and even ripening process that leads to well-developed fruit flavors.
In the late 1980s, Carneros began to emerge as a quality wine producing region. Vineyards were planted with clones of California and Swan varieties. The phylloxera disease plagued the vineyards in the late 1980s, but replanting efforts helped the wine industry to recover.
Oakville
Oakville, Napa Valley is home to some of the world’s finest wines. The region is located in northern California and produces top-quality Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chardonnay.
The area is known for its ideal climate, making it the perfect place for growing grapes. Its two-mile-long valley floor is cooled by cool night fogs, and has a warm climate during the day. This creates a pleasant, dry climate with plenty of sunshine, which contributes to the quality of the wines produced.
Oakville is also home to some of the most famous wineries in the United States. Almost all of the major cult producers in the country have vineyards in the region. They include Screaming Eagle, Opus One, Harlan Estate and Dalla Valle.
While Oakville is best known for its Cabernet Sauvignon, it also has an excellent vineyard for Sauvignon Blanc. Many wines produced here have an earthy and herbal note.
Chiles Valley
Chiles Valley is one of the smallest AVAs in the United States. It is located in the Vaca Mountains above the northeastern part of the Napa Valley. The AVA is known for its unique microclimate.
The name of the AVA is derived from an early pioneer named Joseph Ballinger Chiles. His land grant included a large property in the area. He built the first American flour mill in northern California in 1845. This valley was also sheltered from phylloxera, which killed over 80% of the vineyards in the Napa Valley.
There are currently four wineries within the Chiles Valley district. Two of these, the Volker Eisele Family Estate and Lomita’s Vineyard and Winery, have been in the area for decades. They are located at the top of the valley, and the other two are at lower elevations.
St. Helena
St Helena in Napa Valley is a wine growing region with warm climate. The region is home to several wineries that produce some of the world’s most excellent wines.
There are two main mountain ranges in the area, the Vaca and the Mayacamas. Each has varying degrees of steepness. It isn’t uncommon to see steep slopes on the valley floor.
This warm climate and a narrow corridor through the mountains allow for wide temperature swings throughout the growing season. In addition, the Napa River has an influence on the soils. They are gravelly in nature and have moderate water retention.
St Helena wines are typically deep in color, with fruity flavors and a good tannic structure. Grapes like Zinfandel, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah thrive in the region.
